Century City kosher market accused of breach of contract

A business tort dispute related to what were believed to be kosher meat products is unfolding in Los Angeles. The Doheny Glatt Kosher Meat Market in Century City has been accused of selling products that were not approved by a mashgiach assigned to inspect and supervise meat sales, though such inspection is necessary for a product to be certified as glatt kosher.

In particular, the plaintiff has called for other parties to come forward and create a class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that the market owner inflicted emotional distress by breach of contract and fraud.

The allegations came about after a video emerged, purportedly showing that workers in the market transported boxes of meat into the store late at night. The meat, says the plaintiff, should have been checked and monitored by a mashgiach but wasn't. The video, which was made by a private investigator, was shown locally on television.

According to a news report, the market's kosher certification was removed by the Rabbinical Council of California after the council saw the video. The owner of the store also met with some rabbis who claim that he eventually "admitted to bringing unauthorized products to the store on two to three occasions."

The accusations alone could be a serious blow to the market's business, especially since the lawsuit claims that thousands of customers were subjected to false advertizing.

Regardless of which side of a lawsuit you are on, this kind of business dispute must be handled carefully. Small businesses are especially vulnerable to reputation damage, and it is important for business owners to take the necessary legal steps to limit liability.
